Challenges in structural analysis of subsea cables for offshore wind

The structural response of subsea cables presents significant challenges in the context of offshore wind energy. This speech addresses key challenges encountered in the design, installation, and operation of subsea cables for offshore wind farms. Various factors affecting the structural response, including environmental loads, dynamic behavior, material fatigue, and cable-soil interaction, are discussed. Additionally, the speech highlights the importance of advanced numerical modeling techniques and experimental testing methods in understanding and mitigating these challenges. Strategies for optimizing the structural response of subsea cables are proposed, aiming to enhance the reliability and longevity of offshore wind infrastructure.

Svein Saevik is a professor at the School of MarineTechnology, Norwegian University of Science andTechnology (NTNU) and an elected member of Norwegian Academy of Technological Sciences (NTVA). As an excellent scholar, Professor Svein Saevik has decades of experience in Marine cable engineering design and analysis, and has been committed to developing stress and fatigue analysis models for Marine flexible risers and umbilical cables for more than 20 years. His work results have been software-based and widely used in relevant Marine engineering enterprises, with high authority. A number of certification companies, including the French Classification Society (BV), the Norwegian Register Lloyd's Register (DNV-GL), have designated their software as the basis for analytical verification, and their software achievements include: Cable overall response analysis software -SIMLA, flexible riser fatigue stress analysis software -BFLEX, long pitch umbilical cable fatigue stress analysis software -USAP, short pitch umbilical cable fatigue stress analysis software -UFLEX, etc.

Professor Svein Saevik has published a series of leading and instructive journal and conference articles in the field of pipe and cable engineering, and has received many awards, including the highest award from Statoil, and has served as the chair of the pipe and cable engineering sub-session of the Ocean Engineering Conference (OMAE, ISOPE).
